Wild Pony Conservation

Having only lived at Holly Cottage HQ for 8 months we are still very much finding our way around especially walking our pooch.

Today we tried a new route which led us to a beautiful path and some wild ponies which had been put in an area to help conserve and build the heath land back up.

I had never heard of this type of conservation before but apparently the ponies tend to be less fussy eaters than cattle and tackle older saplings making them more efficient at keeping the birch down.

Birch trees can quickly colonise the heath, and the canopy cast by the mature trees could kill off the heather, along with much of the wildlife that depends on it for food and shelter.

Ponies grazing the site will allow the specialised heath land plants such as heather to flourish.

So the ponies were not only beautiful to see but  are doing a fantastic job without even realising it!
